Funny thing - in Europe, gas prices are so high (around $11/gal) because 60% of the gas price is taxes. But gas prices haven't gone up that much in Europe, because 60% of the prices is in taxes. It seems counter intuitive, but it works. High taxes buffer high price increases, but they also don't allow for the deep lows of prices (like we used to have with gasoline). The only reason that ciggies and alcohol taxes worked is because they actually increased the taxes themselves, not the price of the ciggies.

Gas prices are going up because the amount of gas being produced is not increasing (remember how Bush said going to war with Iraq would be good for oil prices???) but the demand in china and India is increasing exponentially (or so it would seem). The sad reality is that no matter how much we conserve, we will not see the benefit of that conservation, and our only real option is to move away from a fossil fuel economy.

And the economist gets off her soapbox and gets some real work done... :)
